Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was

Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was - Barry Hughart Actually 3.5 stars I upped the rating because the book was exactly what I've been asking for - a fairy tale set in what is for me a foreign culture written for adults who choose to remain child-like in their spirit.

I had fun reading this book ... it reminded me of the Puss-in-Boots fairy tale but with altruism at it's core. It's greatest weakness was maintaining the illusion of ancient China ... every once in a while some modern expression would pop-up that completely took me out of the story. Occasionally it seemed to be intentional because it made me laugh but it wasn't always effective.

I will definitely be joining Master Li and Number Ten Ox for their next adventure.
