The Big Sleep (Philip Marlowe, #1)

The Big Sleep (Philip Marlowe, #1) - Raymond Chandler So this is one of the books that bread the Hard-Boiled Detective genre and what fed film-noir. It's good. I liked it and will probably read the next in the Marlowe series "Farewell, My Lovely".

I can see why this book is the standard of the genre. Chandler really gives Marlowe and the rest of the cast of characters beautifully unique voices. The mystery itself is well layered and is unraveled slowly, carefully, leaving no loose ends or happy endings.

This book was written at the end of the 30's and even with all the above positive comments, it read like it. The attitudes towards women, homosexuals and the establishment are painfully out of date which at times made it hard to keep reading.
